Aubusson rugs come from Aubusson, France, on the Creuse River, about 200 miles from Paris.

Weaving there likely began in the 1200s after tapestry methods arrived—possibly via Moorish craftsmen.

The craft grew in the 1600s during France’s decorative arts era. Inspired by the royal Savonnerie factory, local workshops produced hand-painted designs called cartouches. After approval, dyers and weavers spent months turning those paintings into durable, fashionable rugs.

Recreated today in China with the assistance of French artisans with family lineage in carpet production, ModRen Rugs Inc has been able to recapture the historic glory of this aristocratic art form while preserving the integrity of its original centuries-old hand-woven techniques.
